Newlyweds File Suit Over Recognition as “Bride” and “Groom”
A Roseville couple recently went to court to preserve their legal status as “bride” and “groom” after the state rejected their marriage license.
Gideon Codding and Rachel Bird were recently married in Placer County. When asked to gill out the state forms, they were shocked to discover that the place once marked for “Bride and Groom” was replaced with “Party A and Party B.”
The couple decided to fill in the once recognized labels only to find out, weeks later, that their marriage was refused to be recognized by the state. Because the county refuses to process their form, the Coddings are now not legally married and are denied access to the many benefits of married life.
The courts recently recognized the Coddings’ marriage as legal and paying the attorney’s fees.
Atheists Ask Federal Court to Ban Highway Memorial Crosses
An atheist group in Utah is presenting a case to the federal appeals court to prohibit the use of memorial crosses along Utah highways to mark sites where state troopers have been killed in the line of duty. Although the crosses are privately funded, the atheists claim that the Utah Highway Patrol violates the separation of church and state by sponsoring religious insignia.
Pacific Justice Institute has filed an amicus brief on behalf of the Utah Sheriff’s Association. The states of Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico are also urging the court to not prohibit these crosses as appropriate memorials for officers who hive their lives to protect their fellow citizens.
PJI President, Brad Dacus stated, “No one is forcing anyone else to be religious here; these crosses are simply as easily-recognized method of conveying respect to heroes who have clearly earned it.”
Similar cases such as the Mt. Soledad cross case in San Diego and a Supreme Court cases involving a war memorial cross in the Mojave Desert evidence that this issue is one which must be addressed.
